How to Transition Your Baby Out of Swaddling

As your baby begins showing signs of rolling, it's crucial to transition out of swaddling to ensure their safety and support their development.

Here’s what you need to know about when to stop swaddling and how to make the transition smoothly:

When to Stop Swaddling

It is essential to discontinue swaddling as soon as the baby starts showing signs that they can begin to roll. Babies can begin to show signs of rolling typically between 4-to-6 months, but for some, it may happen earlier. At this stage, swaddling can restrict movement and pose a safety risk.

How to Transition Out of Swaddling

There are a few methods you can use to transition out of swaddling:

Cold Turkey:

Simply stop using the swaddle and move to a regular sleeping bag. While this is the quickest method, the sudden change may disrupt your baby’s sleep. Without the comfort of swaddling, your baby might wake more frequently as they adjust to sleeping with free arms. However, with persistence and consistency, they will gradually adapt, and their sleep will improve over time.

One Arm at a Time:

Use a swaddle that allows one arm to be free at a time – but remember, this must be done before your baby shows signs of rolling. Once they show signs of rolling, it's important to stop swaddling entirely, as leaving one or both arms restricted can prevent them from rolling safely.

Just Some Sleeps:

Begin by removing the swaddle for some naps and nighttime sleeps, gradually weaning off over several days to a week or two. Similar to the ‘one arm at a time’ method, this should only be done before your baby shows signs of rolling.

Use a Transition Sleep Bag:

Ensure the transition sleep bag does not restrict your baby’s ability to roll. Our 2-IN-1 Swaddle Transition Sleep Bag is specifically designed for rolling babies. It features a relaxed fit, similar to a sleeping bag, allowing babies to move their arms freely while still providing a secure, enclosed feeling. The design also offers slight resistance on the arms (when covered), which helps suppress lingering startle reflexes that babies may experience during the swaddle transition process.

What to Do If Your Baby Still Has a Strong Startle Reflex

While many babies experience a reduction in the startle reflex as they begin rolling, some may still demonstrate a moderate to strong startle reflex during this period. In such cases, it's important to note that completely suppressing the startle reflex isn’t advisable, as it could interfere with your baby’s ability to roll safely. However, your baby can still benefit from our 2-IN-1 Swaddle Transition Sleep Bag, which provides a secure and enclosed feeling that many babies find comforting. As your baby becomes accustomed to the freedom of the 2-IN-1 Swaddle Transition Sleep Bag and their startle reflex decreases, sleep quality should improve over time.
